How to Calculate Gematria by Hand

Every system, in every alphabet, is the same three steps. Do it once on paper and the calculators stop being black boxes.

The Three Steps

One: choose a system. This comes first, not last, and skipping it is the origin of most confusion. A word does not have "a" gematria value. It has one value per cipher.

Two: look up each letter and add. Spaces, punctuation, vowel points and accents carry nothing. Only letters count.

Three: reduce, if your system uses reduction. Add the digits of the total repeatedly until one digit remains. This is the digital root.

Worked in English

Take LIGHT in English Ordinal. L is the 12th letter, I the 9th, G the 7th, H the 8th, T the 20th. So 12 + 9 + 7 + 8 + 20 = 56. Reducing: 5 + 6 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.

The same word in Pythagorean reduction, where each letter is collapsed first: L is 3, I is 9, G is 7, H is 8, T is 2. That gives 29, which reduces to 11, then 2. Notice the totals differ (56 against 29) while the reduced digit is the same. That is not a coincidence, it is a property of digital roots: reducing at the start or the end lands in the same place.

Worked in Hebrew

Take שלום, shalom. Shin is 300, lamed is 30, vav is 6, and the final mem is 40 under the standard method. Total: 376.

Now switch to Mispar Gadol, where that final mem is 600 instead. Total: 936. Same word, same letters, a difference of 560, and both figures are correct within their own method. If you ever find your hand calculation disagreeing with a published Hebrew total by a round few hundred, a final letter is almost always the reason.

Worked in Greek

Take λόγος. Lambda 30, omicron 70, gamma 3, omicron 70, sigma 200, giving 373. The accent on the first omicron contributes nothing and is ignored, as are breathings and the iota subscript.

Checking Your Work

Three quick tests catch most slips. An English Ordinal total cannot exceed 26 times the number of letters. A Sumerian total is always divisible by six, because it is Ordinal times six. And a Pythagorean total cannot exceed nine per letter. If a figure fails one of these, recount before looking for meaning in it.

The most frequent actual error is not arithmetic at all. It is dropping a repeated letter, which the eye skips easily in a long word. Counting the letters first, then checking that your sum has that many terms, eliminates it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I include vowels?

In English, yes: every letter counts. In Hebrew the vowel points are diacritics, not letters, so they carry no value. In Greek, vowels are full letters and count, but the accents on them do not.

What about numbers and punctuation in the phrase?

They are ignored. Only alphabetic characters have cipher values.

Should I reduce the total?

Only if you are working in a system that uses reduction, such as Pythagorean or Mispar Katan. Reporting a reduced digit as if it were the full total is a common source of mismatched figures.
