English Ordinal vs Reverse Ordinal

Two ciphers built from the same 26 letters, related by a simple formula, which is why they agree far more often than coincidence would suggest.

The Two Ciphers

English Ordinal counts forwards: A is 1, Z is 26. Reverse Ordinal counts backwards: A is 26, Z is 1. Every letter's two values are linked by one equation, since reverse equals 27 minus ordinal.

That relationship has a consequence people notice without understanding. For a word of n letters, the two totals always add up to 27n. A four letter word's Ordinal and Reverse totals sum to 108. A six letter word's sum to 162. Always, with no exceptions.

Why LOVE Gives 54 in Both

LOVE is 12 + 15 + 22 + 5 = 54 in Ordinal, and 15 + 12 + 5 + 22 = 54 in Reverse. This looks remarkable until you apply the rule above. Four letters means the two totals must sum to 108, and 54 is exactly half of 108. The word is what you might call self-balancing.

So the real question is not why LOVE matches, but how often any word does. The answer: whenever a word's Ordinal total lands on 13.5n. For four letter words that is 54, for six letter words 81, for eight letter words 108. Words hitting their midpoint are uncommon but not rare, and for odd letter counts the midpoint is not a whole number, so a match is impossible.

What This Means for Claims

If someone presents a word matching in both ciphers as significant, the finding is arithmetic rather than mystical. It says the letters happen to average the middle of the alphabet, which is roughly M and N. A word full of middle alphabet letters will match. A word of A's and Z's will not.

Two useful consequences follow. First, an odd length word can never match in both, so a claimed match there is an error. Second, if you know one total you can derive the other without recalculating, which is a fast way to check a published figure.

When the Choice Actually Matters

For comparing two words, it matters a great deal, but only in that you must not mix them. Comparing one word's Ordinal against another's Reverse is meaningless. Within a single cipher, comparison is fine.

For reduction it matters less than expected. Both ciphers often reduce to related digits, because reversing the alphabet does not disturb the underlying digital root arithmetic as much as it appears to.
