Mispar Gadol vs Mispar Hechrachi

The two methods agree on every letter except five, and those five are enough to make published Hebrew totals disagree by hundreds.

The Single Difference

Mispar Hechrachi is the standard absolute value: alef 1 through tav 400, with the five final forms worth exactly what their ordinary forms are worth. Mispar Gadol is identical except that those finals continue the ladder: final kaf 500, final mem 600, final nun 700, final pe 800, final tsadi 900.

Everywhere else the methods are the same. A word containing no final letter has one value under both, which is why the disagreement seems to appear at random until you know where to look.

Seeing the Gap

שלום, shalom, ends in a final mem. Under Hechrachi: 300 + 30 + 6 + 40 = 376. Under Gadol: 300 + 30 + 6 + 600 = 936. The difference is 560, which is exactly 600 minus 40.

That structure gives a diagnostic. The gap between the two methods is always the sum of a fixed set of differences: 480 for a final kaf, 560 for a final mem, 650 for a final nun, 720 for a final pe, 810 for a final tsadi. If a published total differs from yours by one of those numbers, you have found the cause without needing to recheck a single letter.

Which One Is Standard

Hechrachi, comfortably. Classical commentary uses it by default, and an unlabelled Hebrew total almost always means the standard method. Gadol appears in specific contexts, often where a commentator wants a larger figure to line up with something.

This is worth being blunt about: because Gadol is available, a determined person can pick whichever method produces the total they want. Doing that quietly is the single most common way gematria arguments are rigged. Stating the method up front costs nothing and makes the claim checkable.

Why the Extended Values Exist at All

The Hebrew alphabet ends at tav, worth 400, so the hundreds rank is incomplete: there is no ordinary letter for 500 through 900. Greek solved this by keeping three archaic letters as numerals. Hebrew solved it by reusing the five final forms. Both are patches on the same structural gap.

Practical Rule

Use Hechrachi unless you have a specific reason not to, and always state which method you used. When comparing two words, calculate both under the same method, and check whether either ends in a final letter, since that is the only place the choice can bite.

The Hebrew calculator shows both methods at once, so the gap is visible rather than hidden, and the letter chart lists every value in both columns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which method is the default?

Mispar Hechrachi. An unlabelled Hebrew gematria figure almost always uses the standard values.

How much can the two differ?

By a fixed amount per final letter: 480 for kaf, 560 for mem, 650 for nun, 720 for pe and 810 for tsadi. A discrepancy matching one of those numbers identifies the cause immediately.

Is Mispar Gadol legitimate?

Yes, it is a recognised method. The problem is not the method but switching to it silently in order to reach a desired total.
