The Calculation
The Hebrew word חי, chai, means "living" or "alive". Chet is 8, yod is 10, so the word totals 18. There is nothing more to the derivation, which is part of why it has held: anyone can verify it in seconds.
The Custom
Charitable gifts and monetary presents are commonly given in multiples of eighteen. A wedding gift of 180, a donation of 360, a contribution of 1,800: each is understood as giving in units of life. Synagogue appeals and charitable campaigns are frequently denominated this way, and the practice is entirely current rather than antiquarian.
The number also appears as jewellery, with the two letters worn as a pendant, and in the toast l'chaim, "to life", which shares the same root.
Why This One Stuck
Most gematrias are observations inside a commentary. This one became a practice, and the difference is instructive. Chai is short, so the arithmetic is transparent. The meaning of the word is unambiguous and positive. And the number is small enough to be usable as a unit of currency, which no four hundred point total could be.
Compare it with 26 for the Tetragrammaton, which is equally solid arithmetically but functions as a subject of commentary rather than a custom. The difference is usability, not validity.
What It Does Not Mean
Eighteen carries no claim of luck, protection or outcome. The number is a way of saying "life" in the language of quantity, closer to a pun made durable than to a belief about numbers having power. Reading it as a lucky number imports something the tradition does not assert.
